A New Business Sprouts Up in Northeast PA

Northeast Hydroponics & Homebrewing Finds Light in Dickson City

Scranton, PA (February 21, 2012) – On February 1st, a new business opened its doors just outside the heart of the Electric City, finding light for growth and opportunity in Dickson City – Northeast Hydroponics & Homebrewing. Richard Lupi, owner of the sprouting business, comes from New York with an extensive background in gardening and hydroponics. Seeing an untapped market for his industry in northeastern Pennsylvania, he opened a modestly-sized, 1500 square foot store across from the Viewmont Mall at 221 Scranton-Carbondale Highway in the Fashion Mall Plaza.

“Brewing and gardening has been a long time hobby of mine,” said Richard Lupi. “Being able to help and teach people how to grow the best vegetables year round is something that I truly enjoy doing and it’s very exciting to see my dream come to fruition after years of working in greenhouses and a hydroponic store. When I finally decided to make the leap and open my own store, there wasn’t a better place to do it than the Scranton area. Home brewing is a shared hobby among many in this area and economically speaking, this area is growing quickly with movers and shakers full of great ideas. I am proud to be a part of the business community here.”

For more than twenty years, Rich has been in the hydroponics industry, getting his start at the ripe age of 11 when he got his first job in an orchard. Intrigued by the intricacies of plants, soil and the marriage between them, he moved onto work at a plant nursery, caring for thousands of plants until a motorcycle accident which prevented him from lifting heavy plants. Thankfully, shortly after the accident he fell into an opportunity to run a hydroponics store and nursey, which was perfect for him; he could still care, learn and watch plant grow to their fullest potential, without all the heavy lifting required in a greenhouse. Here, he spent the better part of his last 20 years in the industry.

Northeast Hydroponics & Homebrewing is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and by appointment and features a full line of products for home brewing, whether you are brewing beer or wine, as well as an array of home and garden products from organic nutrients and fertilizers to light fixtures, bulbs, ballasts and tables.
